#BWARAO: Double Feature Post!!!

Posted On Thursday, November 24, 2016

As so many are settling down to gorge themselves on good food and family fun, I just wanted to share how THANKFUL I am for the amazing comic book offerings from this week's #TheReadPile!  This week leaned a bit heavy towards the works of Jason Aaron, but he's certainly a worthy writer to dote so much attention to (once again)!

And because the dinner bell is already ringing, I figure you guys wouldn't mind a double-dose, so I'm posting this week's episode of Black, White & Read All Over along with it!

Happy Thanksgiving...and save a plate for me!

By the Numbers: The 2016 V:IP Wrap Up

Posted On Sunday, November 20, 2016

With last weekend's attendance of the Motor City Black Age Comic Con, my 2016 convention season has OFFICIALLY come to a close!  And just like last year, I want to share how V:IP did over the year.  Not only does the transparency keep me accountable for the imprint's success, but hopefully it inspires others who are looking to carve out their own path in comic book publishing.

So, how did we do...?

Total Events: 32 -- Despite venturing into previously untapped markets (this year was our first time doing shows in Peoria, IL, Sacramento, CA, and the state of Michigan, as a whole!), we actually saw a significant drop in the amount of events we took part in from last year (49).  It's easy to assume that only nabbing sixty-five percent of last year's scheduled events would seem like a misstep.  But I think the lighter schedule allowed for us put more focus on creating new content and making sure that what we've put out has gotten the maximum penetration in existing markets.

Miles Traveled: 15,730 -- Obviously, less shows means fewer miles (3,745 less, to be exact) traveled, but racking up 15K+ is far from slouchy!

Cities/States Visited: 22/17 -- I'm STILL trying to figure out where all I went last year that I didn't this year (Ft. Lauderdale...Nashville...?)!  LOL -- with at least 5 new cities, we're still down 4 from last year's total cities and two fewer in states visited.

But as cool as these stats are, they aren't quite the nitty-gritty of my business.  Since the #FromBitsToBooks campaign, we've been almost exclusively focused on moving our books at conventions and events, and that's my true measure for success.  So, lets see how we did there.

Books produced: 2399 (+2% from 2015)
Books sold: 2268 (-.005% from 2015)

Wait a tick...even with such a substantial drop in events, it looks like it had a NOMINAL effect on my unit sales for the year.  I actually had to produce more books, despite just coming 11 units short of total books sold in 2015!  That means, on average, my performance at events in 2016 was 66 percent BETTER than last year -- #BOOM!

Before the year's end, we've got one or two more major announcements that will set the stage for V:IP is doing in 2017!  Stay tuned and THANK YOU -- THANK YOU -- THANK YOU for all the support!

Black, White & Read All Over S3 Ep 140 - "Does That Stain?"

Posted On Thursday, November 17, 2016

This week TOTALLY made up for last week's lackluster-fest!  The BIG winner was Image Comics who came out the gate with some stellar books, each with such a unique voice that they could help but be heard over the other titles from Marvel, DC, etc.  I tackled three of them myself and am all the happier for it!

Make sure you're subscribed so you can get episodes as soon as they're published!  And feel free to let us know your thoughts on our reviews and what books you want us to read next -- we LOVE hearing from you guys!

BOOKS WE COVERED:

#TheReadPile - 11/16/16

Posted On Wednesday, November 16, 2016

Image Comics took the lion's share of the books on #TheReadPile this week -- and as usual, each were as diverse from the others as possible, with one notable difference: they're all pretty great reads!!

2 DC's and 1 Marvel made up the rest of the bunch, which left me with a far better feeling than last week's books.  Glad I'm back on the good side of the comic book gods!!

Black Panther #8 (Marvel) T. Coates (w) C. Sprouse (a)

Superman # 11 (DC) P. Tomasi (w) P. Gleason (a)

Black, White and Read All Over S3 Ep 139 - "Weak Week"

Posted On Thursday, November 10, 2016

This was a crazy tough week!  But the culprit wasn't a LACK of books to read, just not so many COMPELLING reads within them!  I think Ryan definitely won the week with the range of genres and imprints he covered -- every once and a while, he shows why he RUNS a comic shop and I only make comics ;) (lol)

I'm already hawking for what next week's Wednesday will bring!

*Shout out to all of the creative teams that put in the work to get these books out -- I may not have loved all that you did, but I respect the craftsmanship you put behind it all!

Books We Covered:
Invincible Iron Man #1 (Marvel)
Mother Panic #1(DC
All-Star Batman #4 (DC)
Batman TMNT Adventures #1 (IDW/DC)

#TheReadPile 11/9/16

I went VERY Bat-HEAVY this week, nabbing three titles featuring the Dark Knight!  Not really sure why I was so focused on the Caped Crusader...maybe it was the mention by Evan Peters (during his Q&A at Wizard World Pittsburgh last weekend) that he'd love to play a Bat-villain one day...hmmmm.

But even going all half-batty, there was still PLENTY to sink my teeth into!  Black, White & Read All Over goes LIVE on Weds -- but of course, if you're SUBSCRIBED, you already know that!!
