Dare to Compare - V:IP vs. Indy/Indies

Posted On Saturday, January 16, 2016

Superman vs. Hulk

Deadpool vs. Deathstroke.

Wonder Woman vs. Capt. Marvel.

Ironman vs. Batman.

Go to any comic shop in America and you can begin an hours-long conversation, making new friends (or possibly losing some), simply invoking this three word, alliterated question: Who Would Win...?

Opinions, power set facts, and historical inferences would fly as these titans of our modern myths are examined and discussed with doctorate level detail.  Illustrating not only our collective know-how about the characters involved, but also our personal imaginative applications of their abilities, tactics, strengths and weaknesses.  Will it sway your opponent's opinion...maybe -- if you're REALLY convincing, but probably not!  As far as pop cultural iconography goes, which character, superteam or imprint you follow is just as sacred as your favorite sports team (if you're into that sort of thing, lol!).  When they're good, they're great, and when they're bad, they're good, because no matter what -- you love them.

But it's an outlook that is strangely absent from the world of indy/indie titles.  You don't hear conversations about who is better, Paragon (from 133Art's One Nation) or Hotshot (a character from the self-title series, soon to be republished under Legacy Rising).  You don't have Wildfire (flagship title from Legends Press) butting heads against Justice Theta (checkout Fallen Justice from Red-Handed Studios), going toe-to-toe!

Why not?

Where independent titles are concerned, we have no problem throwing our wares as the wall, fighting back the tide of mainstream comics.  When the mainstream falls short of the mark in terms of diversity, unique storytelling, and characterizations, we firm shout back that WE are that answer.  But, never do we actively test our mettle against one another...and I think that should change.  Competition is the nature of the game we're playing -- not every one is going to win, every day -- and just as in the stories we've penned, we've got to be willing see our characters lose against a better opponent, without the shield of them being more funded or marketed than our own.

Dare to Compare Challenge:

If you're a small-press/independent publisher, I want you to compare your characters to mine!  Make them fight -- even beat them (if you can), and share your stories with world.  If any of them come my way, I'll gladly share them -- especially if they're pretty good!

I dare to compare -- DO YOU?!

Saturday Kicks Off U Cre-8 School!!!

Posted On Tuesday, January 12, 2016

Class is set to begin this week!

The first session of the U Cre-8 Comics School is set to kick off, this Saturday (Jan. 16th) from 11:30-1:30pm.  While our regular location will be Comic Town (1249 Morse Rd, Columbus, OH 43229), we'll be meeting up at the Karl Rd. Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library (5590 Karl Rd, Columbus, OH 43229)!

This first session will have more of a Meet&Greet style -- a chance for me to gauge the interest and knowledge of those signed up!  We're still breaking things up by age, so as planned, the first group (Ages 6-12) will meet for the 11:30-12:30 block, while the 13+ group will take 12:30-1:30.  We'll still have a bit of a lesson during that time:

Group A: 11:30-12:30
Line. Shape. Object.

Group B: 12:30-1:30
Idea vs. Story

Paper will be provided, but if you have a preference for drawing/writing utensils, please bring them with you!  I'm also asking that you bring a copy of (one of) your favorite comic books, or a picture of your favorite character!

And because we're not going to be in our regularly scheduled location, this first session is FREE!!!

We've already gotten a few signed up -- but definitely have room for a few more!  Email me today and mark your spot!

The 2015 SPACE Prize Finalists ARE IN...!

Posted On Sunday, January 3, 2016

Spend just a little bit of time with me and you'll quickly find that I'm quite proud to of being from Columbus, OH.  Home of the Buckeyes, Bluejackets, and Clippers, Columbus is a gem of a city! But don't confuse the Capital City as just another sports town -- we're a thriving hotbed for artistic talent, particularly in the world of comics!  We're home of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Research Library AND the award-winning creator, Jeff Smith (Bone, RASL) -- but our crown jewel may be the Small Press & Alternative Comics Expo (S.P.A.C.E.).  Started and managed by Bob Corby (Backporch Comics), if you're a comic creator in Columbus, its a rite of passage to exhibit there, even if your tastes in comics run a bit more in the mainstream.

2015 wasn't an easy year for S.P.A.C.E.  The Ramada Inn, it's home for the last five or so years, closed its doors just months before it's scheduled date, causing a last minute scramble to find a new location.  But Bob pulled through, finding a new home at the Northland Performing Arts Center and making what was a spring-time show, now set in July.  Unfortunately, the move meant that a number of longtime exhibitors wouldn't be able to attend, as the new dates conflicted with other events -- but Ken Eppstein, head of Nix Comics came to the rescue, hosting Extra SPACE, to make sure that date could still celebrate the comic-booky goodness that Columbus loves to showcase!

So, with S.P.A.C.E. back on track, I was ready to represent and submit for the COVETED SPACE Prize -- a yearly recognition of the best works created and showcased at that year's show.  And just as we have for years, V:IP was ready to be counted!  And out of our five entries, THREE have been counted as finalists in their respective categories!

Make some noise for...

General Category:
Ol' Crazy & the 40oz of Death
Victor Dandridge (Writer)
Bryan Moss (Artist)

Mini-Comics:
Colonies
Victor Dandridge (Writer/Artist)

Web Comics:

Wonder Care: After School
Justin Castaneda (Writer/Artist)
Victor Dandridge (Letterer)

Now, here's where we need YOU!  If you were an exhibitor at the show this year, you're eligible to cast your vote on the titles you feel deserve to win!  We know that many were too busy moving their own books to come check out ours, so for a limited time, we're offering you a chance to read each of the finalist entries -- FOR FREE!!!  Just hit the links of their names and ENJOY!!!

And always, give some love to the other finalists!  We celebrate comics -- even the competition! ;)

HAPPY NEW YEARS!

Posted On Friday, January 1, 2016

Welcome to 2016, everybody!  I hope everyone had a wonderful and enjoyable 2015 -- we certainly did, accomplishing many of the goals we set for last year.  But our goal is to absolutely blow it out of the water with everything we do THIS year!  We're kickin' ass and MAKING names (for our creators, our titles and our characters!) and all begins today!

In just a few days, we're taking off for our first convention of the year, returning to the Wizard World New Orleans Comic Con!!!  Now if you haven't checked out the roster of celebs, writers and artists -- let's just say you've been missing out on one of the most extensive and exciting line-ups I've ever seen!  From Chris Evans to Norman Reedus, Matt Smith to Amanda Conner, and more!  Now, maybe you've got a few dollars left over from Christmas and you HAVEN'T gotten you ticket yet -- no worries.  You can buy them from US and for your support, we'll reward you with an #ExclusivePrint, featuring one of our best selling variant designs from The Samaritan campaign last year!

And speaking of The Samaritan, for a limited time, we'll be offering an exclusive collection, that features each chapter as individual issues; most of which have NEVER before been released in the floppy format!

We're also expanding our reach with Comic Town -- home of Black, White & Read ALL Over, by launching a 5 week U Cre-8 Comics School, later this month!  Every Saturday (from Jan. 16th-Feb13th) we'll host 2, 45min sessions at Comic Town*, geared towards instructing and encouraging the NEXT generation of comic creators!  Classes are only $10 a week, but with limited space, are sure to fill up quick!  Make sure you're signed up as soon as possible to secure your spot!

From conventions, to the 100th episode of BWARO, to our newest releases, 2016 is already looking to be one of our busiest years EVER!  To keep everyone on track with where we're going and what we're doing, we've created this custom calendar!  As we lock in more dates, we'll keep it updated so that you're ALWAYS in the know for what's happening with the V:IP camp!

There's not a moment to waste, so I better get back to work!  Thank you all for the support you've given us so far -- and get ready for some company, because we're gonna make our fanbase bigger than ever!

-V.

*Due to a scheduled Magic the Gathering event, our first week is tentatively scheduled to be at the Columbus Metropolitan Library Karl Rd. Branch!  Should anything change, registrants will be notified by email.
